Volunteering in Christchurch

Christchurch Countryside Volunteers are a group who regularly do practical conservation work on St Catherine’s Hill, as well as other nature reserves and greenspaces in the area. We operate weekly Tuesday volunteer work party sessions between 10am and approximately 3:30pm, with the location changing each week. The group are very friendly and welcoming and the work is suited to mixed abilities. There is always a job for everyone from litter picking to cutting back and creating new habitat for wildlife. The option is there to come along for as long or as little as you wish. Refreshments are provided and all appropriate tools and PPE.

There’s usually a pause in activity during the bird nesting season and late summer, offering a full programme from September to May.

The location and nature of tasks will vary throughout the year, depending on where extra pairs of hands are needed.

Volunteers cover a large area from Chewton Bunny on the Dorset/Hampshire border to St Catherine’s Hill in Christchurch.

The main sites visited in Christchurch are:

If you would like to come along, please contact countryside@bcpcouncil.gov.uk for further details, to join our mailing list to be notified of the programmed sessions. Under 16s are welcome to come please bring an adult.

Welcome to St Catherine’s Hill WI – Christchurch

Our WI has been running since February 2011 and we like to think we are a friendly, easy-going group.

Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month from 2:00 until 4:00pm and visitors are welcome to attend up two meetings. Doors open at 1:30pm.

We have a variety of speakers throughout the year and many other activities that are arranged both by the Committee and through suggestions from members. Each year we hold an in-house Christmas Party and in January a special lunch which is held in a prime local venue.

Traditionally ‘Jerusalem’ was sung at the beginning of each meeting, but now reserve this for very special occasions. Following registration each meeting commences with the business required to be discussed by our President, our Secretary and our Treasurer. This is then followed by the Speaker or activity for the day after which we can enjoy refreshments and socializing. Refreshments are paid for at registration and cost 50p. Raffle tickets are available at 50p per strip.

A leaflet is regularly produced showing forthcoming events and a list of the Committee Members together with their contact details. This is available from the table after registration.

Each month the annex to the hall contains information concerning any forthcoming events including sheets for names to be put down should you wish to participate. There is a book stall and a monthly raffle. Proceeds from these go towards the social events and any choice of charity for the year.

For those who decide to become a full member we are aware it can be rather daunting to join an already established group and if you have any concerns, please approach the Committee Members and we will do our best to assist. Everyone has a name badge which should be worn at each meeting and try not to be concerned at approaching anyone- we’ve all been new members at some stage!

We hope to welcome you as a new member and sincerely wish you will enjoy our group and activities, taking part in making something special and making new friends over the coming months and years.

If you wish to join or get further information, contact Secretary Barbara Ford - 07968476771.

Investing in our hospitals

It is an exciting time at University Hospitals Dorset as we continue with our plans to transform our hospitals. The total programme of works runs up to 2026 and forms part of the £250m transformation and development plans for our hospital sites.

Royal Bournemouth Hospital (RBH)

  • Developing the major emergency care centre for east Dorset

  • new Emergency Department - larger than current Poole and Royal Bournemouth facilities put together

  • brand-new maternity and children’s unit

  • new critical care unit with capacity for up to 30 beds

  • purpose-designed pathology hub providing a modern, flexible testing capacity

Benefits

Emergency cases will be focussed on the RBH site with increased consultant and specialist team cover seven days a week. This will reduce numbers of patients transferring between hospitals, put less demand on ambulances and hospital services, and achieve better outcomes for patients.

Poole Hospital

  • developing the major planned care hospital for east Dorset

  • state-of-the-art theatre complex

  • new Urgent Treatment Centre - open 24/7

  • expanded day case surgery

  • enhanced outpatient, cancer and diagnostic services

  • innovative new community hub

Benefits

Fewer cancellations due to emergency admissions with a clear and sustainable pathway for patients. Plans offer increased patient safety through reduced variation, getting patients to the right place first time/at the right time.

Christchurch Hospital

Ambitious plans of the site that will help support our ongoing treatment of our patients, including new charity funded Macmillan Unit as well as options to create a senior living community, with affordable shared ownership housing.

ADVERTISING BOARD ON ST CATHERINE'S HILL

An application has been submitted to erect an 8 metre wide Digital billboard at the entrance to Hillside drive from Hurn road. The planning application number is 8/22/0784.

BCP are almost certainly going to recommend this for refusal, but we should all keep a look out for these planning applications which have been submitted since the St Catherine's Hill land sales to private buyers via auction houses.
See our website for more details.

Druitt Hall – An Update Report (October)

The Trustees are extremely grateful to all those who have worked so hard to support retention of the hall.

Circumstances have allowed the Town Council to reconsider their withdrawal of a promise made to extend the lease and to fund work on the windows.

We will be sharing with the Town Council proposals for further improvements to the hall and will be seeking some assistance with funding from them and from other funds that will become available to us.

Planned work on the windows, wall insulation, re-cladding and redecoration, all of which have been on ‘hold’ for over a year, can now be put into action.

The U-turn of June 2022 had returned the Trustees to the position of meeting their repair obligations under the current lease.  Accordingly a contractor has been appointed to repair and refurbish the windows. This is work which does not require conservation planning approval and will return the windows to full working order in all their "1950's glory".

The cost for this is lower than 50% of the figure for new windows as quoted to the Council this year. The work is to take place in the first weeks of January.

Although the Council has now not ratified (de-ratified?) that reversal, for which we are very grateful, we are committed to a contractor. This does of course release the funds previously committed by the Council and we look forward to a sympathetic re-allocation of them!

The hire of Druitt Hall in 2022 so far is averaging 33.5 hours per week and we have not increased hire rates since January 2021. There are 20 regular hirers and a number of recurring short-term hirers, plus various one-off family parties and the like. DHCA have supported all hirers in coping with the recurring effect of Covid restrictions, ensuring that the facility was available for safe use on EVERY occasion permitted by Government guidance.

Time was also allowed to hirers to carry out their own specific Covid measures, amounting to a further 16% of use of the hall given without charge.  This will cease from 1st December.

The estimated annual footfall at the hall stands at 17,000 visitors.

Finally, a personal statement from me as a chartered surveyor and admirer and respecter of the efforts made to originally provide the hall.  Misleading and inaccurate assertions have been made about the building, often by people who have not visited the facility for years. .

I encourage the Trustees, in cooperation with the Town Council, to make further improvements to bring this facility to an even higher and exemplary standard of sustainable public service and environmental and healthy performance.  This will sit well with the Town Council's declaration of a climate emergency.

I ask the wider public to encourage and support the Town Council to both respect and reinforce the legacy of the Druitt family, especially the spirit of the original covenants intended to protect the valuable Druitt Gardens.

Chris Guest

Trustee, DHCA

What is a Neighbourhood Plan?

All planning applications are assessed against policies and criteria set out in both national and local policies, as well as legal matters.

Nationally the National Planning Policy Framework (“NPPF”) sets out the “high level” policies; with the local level plans being set by Local Planning Authorities (usually Unitary, Borough, District Councils). The local level plans are called “Local Plans”.

As a Town Council the law allows for the creation of a Neighbourhood Plan in consultation with the local community. Once a plan has been created and has passed a referendum and been adopted by the Local Planning Authority it shall become a factor to consider when planning applications are assessed.

This means that the Local Planning Authority are obliged by law to consider the Neighbourhood Plan. As a mechanism to influence the places and spaces we live in, Christchurch Town Council has set out on this journey.
