BCP COUNCIL UPDATE

Appeal regarding the Proposal for Drive Through restaurant at Corner of The Grove and Barrack Road – Ref: APP/V1260/W/23/3333238

On Tuesday 14th May 2024 a Government Inspector will hear the appeal brought by Fortitudo Limited for their planning application proposal, worded as follows –
Erection of a drive-thru restaurant, selling food and drink for consumption on and off the premises (sui generis) at Advertising Corner, The Grove and Barrack Road, Christchurch, BH23 2EX.

If you want to attend the Hearing, it starts at 10am at BCP Council Offices, Bourne Avenue, BH2 6DY and is being held in the Council Chamber.

The Inspector will hear both sides of the argument for and against the proposal.  Fortitudo will obviously speak in support and set out their reasons to grant. Margaret will be attending the Hearing to speak in objection to the proposal.  BCP Planning and Highways have objected and will be represented by Officers. We will be asking the Inspector to dismiss the appeal.

A decision will not be made on the day of the Hearing and we will let you know the outcome in due course.

Two Planning Committees for BCP Council
You may know that since the inception of BCP Council we have said that there should not be a single planning committee for the whole area, as it is too large.  We believe that planning decisions should be made more locally.  After much campaigning and effort, it has finally been agreed that commencing May 2024, BCP Council will have 2 Planning Committees, one for the Eastern side and the other for the Western side.  The whole of Christchurch is covered by the Eastern Planning Committee, which also includes some areas of Boscombe towards Bournemouth.  We consider this to be a very successful outcome which will help to ensure that decisions are made by Cllrs. more local to their area.

Chairman of BCP
We thought we would let you know that a Christchurch Cllr. was re-elected as Chairman of BCP at the AGM on 7th May.  Cllr Lesley Dedman of  Mudeford, Stanpit and West Highcliffe is Chairman of BCP for the current Municipal Year to May 2025.

Christchurch Town Council acquire Waitrose public car park

The ownership of the Bypass car park is in the process of being transferred from BCP Council to Christchurch Town Council.

The car park, near Waitrose, was first agreed for sale at a BCP Council meeting in September 2023.

Once the transfer is complete, Christchurch Town Council will lease the car park to Waitrose to “secure the business as a major employer in Christchurch.”

There will also be 90 minutes of free parking for shoppers, as well as long stay option, to encourage foot traffic into the town centre.

The town council said Waitrose will undertake the responsibility of maintaining the car park including relining, reinstating the zebra crossing and landscaping the site.

James Atkinson, acting town clerk for Christchurch Town Council, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for the town council, to acquire an asset of this magnitude will contribute to the resources and the future development of the services across the Town.
“Christchurch Residents should really get behind this as not only does it secure much needed parking but moreover, provides free parking in the Town Centre.”

Christchurch Town Council said the transfer of ownership brings with it a “multitude of benefits for the community”, and will have no financial burden on the taxpayer as it will not increase the precept.

Mr Atkinson continued: “By leasing the car park to Waitrose, we are helping to secure a big employer – all at no cost to the Christchurch residents.”

In welcoming the asset transfer, councillor Michael Tarling said: "This transition not only reflects the town council's proactive commitment to shaping Christchurch's future with resident interests at heart, but also ensures no added financial burden to taxpayers.

“Moreover, the promise of 90 minutes of free parking in our town centre will foster increased foot traffic, benefiting local businesses and enhancing accessibility for residents and visitors alike.”

Waitrose Christchurch branch manager, Neil Scorey, said: “The proposed agreement for the car park not only allows us to make parking easier for our customers to ensure they have an even better shopping experience, but reinforces our long-term commitment to the town.”

Did Hitler die in the Fuhrerbunker? Richard Hutley
Adolf Hitler, Fuhrer of Nazi Germany from 1934 to 1945, was reported by German media to have killed himself by gunshot on 30th April 1945 in his FUhrerbunker in Berlin. With no body ever found and reported sightings into the late 1950's in South America, is it possible he survived? The evidence suggests he did, before his demise in 1962.

Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride

Sunday 19th May

On Sunday the 19th of May 2024, The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride takes place in cities across the globe to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer and men’s mental health on behalf of Movember. The Bournemouth-Poole ride has become the largest in the UK and one of the largest worldwide with around 1000 riders.

If you would like to watch the spectacle and cheer us on (or avoid it!) the route will be as follows:

Depart Poole Quay at 09:45, through Poole Park, round Sandbanks, through Canford Cliffs, up to Westbourne to Bournemouth Pier.  After a break at the Pier we then ride along the promenade to Boscombe Pier, along the Overcliff Drive, up through Southbourne,  and Boscombe to the Wessex Way, Hurn, Sopley and finish at Destination Triumph (Stony Lane, Christchurch) with The End of the Ride Event at approx 12:30.

It is quite a spectacle and the noise is unbelievable.  Some of the drivers have very expensive bikes and some dress up in top hat and tails!!  It is a very happy event with the crowd waving and cheering and the bikers responding.
