BCP Council report Summer response plan supported hottest weekend of 2021

Our dedicated multi-agency summer response plan to welcome people back safely, and keep Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole clean and safe, remains in place as temperatures continue to soar. More than 400,000 visitors came to Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole over the hottest weekend of 2021.

  • 89 tonnes of waste was collected from the 650+ additional bins put in place
  • More than 40 missing children were reunited with families and guardians

  • Toilets remained open later with additional cleansing put in place

  • A 24 hour beach patrol took action against those illegally camping with nine tents removed

  • Over 570 people used the park and ride service at Kings Park, Boscombe

  • Temporary road closures were put in place at Boscombe and Sandbanks to alleviate queuing traffic

  • Additional enforcement officers issued more than 810 parking tickets to those who parked irresponsibly with a priority on on-street seafront areas, where a high level of vehicles had parked in contravention causing issues for moving traffic and emergency vehicles

  • Council owned seafront catering kiosks experienced their busiest ever day trading Saturday, exceeding even that of Air Festival weekends

Thanks to our partners at the Police, RNLI and South West Ambulance Service who have been very busy keeping you and our towns safe.

Have your say on the future of our parks and green spaces

Over 500 people have already had their say on the future of our parks and green spaces in a survey which will help shape our draft Green Infrastructure Strategy.

This strategy will look at the way our green infrastructure is used and designed in the future, taking into account the way you connect with green spaces across the conurbation.

So whether you want to see more green living rooms with outdoor performances, or more rewilding across the conurbation, have your say and let us know!

BCP Council trial change in approach to grass management

BCP Council are trialling changes to the way some of our grass areas across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole are managed by reducing the cutting schedules in certain places to allow grass and wildflowers to grow. This has the potential to reduce the carbon footprint. They will be monitoring this trial closely, with the aim of involving volunteers in wildlife and plant surveys over the coming months.

News Article (bcpcouncil.gov.uk)

The verges are becoming problematic and numerous complaints have been made and if people continue to complain then BCP will have to review their rationale for the mess along the roadsides.

One resident has commented "Grass verges! I witnessed a local dog walker allow her dog to poo in the overgrown verge in Hillside Drive, knowing it could not be seen, she walked away, if the grass had been cut I'm sure she would have made an effort to pick it up.

I support meadows with wild flowers and natural vegetation which encourages fauna & flora but leaving roadside verges to grow, just makes the area look a mess. We all take pride in our properties keeping them tidy and maintained then the council wants to encourage the opposite to potentially save money and reduce it's carbon footprint."

Transforming Cities Fund sustainable travel routes

Consultation on TCF’s proposals for 78km of green travel routes across south east Dorset is now closed.

Thank you to everyone who had their say – 27,000 people viewed the plans and 2,500 completed surveys.

As well as the new cycling and walking paths, these two key routes have a particular emphasis on improving bus infrastructure and journeys.

COVID-19 Summer support scheme to help vulnerable residents

A community support scheme is being extended into the summer months to help local residents and families who are facing financial hardship due to the pandemic. A government award of £251,371 has been allocated to the council to help towards the COVID summer support scheme.

Citizens Advice and BCP are co-ordinating efforts to ensure people can access a range of support they need, which includes help for residents who are struggling to afford utility bills (heating, cooking, lighting) or water bills (including sewerage).

Dispose of your face mask safely with Wilko

New scheme turns used disposable masks into raw material for reuse

The rise in the use of disposable face masks has unfortunately resulted in mask litter, found around our streets, parks and beaches, affecting the health of our planet. Wilko has teamed up with Scan2Recycle and ReWorked to collect your disposable masks and turn them into boards for building materials, furniture and even PPE bins!

Local schools receive £200k+ in TCF grants

21 schools in the BCP Council region will be benefiting from a total of over £214,000 worth of grants (up to £20,000 each) from the Transforming Cities Fund (TCF) programme. The grants are being awarded to the schools to help pay for the installation of new or improved ‘end-of-trip’ facilities, which encourage healthy and eco-friendly journeys to school.

Kerbside Battery collections

Did you know you can recycle household batteries at the kerbside alongside your other recycling?

Please do not put these extra items inside your recycling, instead use a carrier bag and leave them next to or on the lid of your recycling bin for collection on your recycling day.

It is important not to put batteries in with your other recycling. Batteries need to be collected, transported and recycled separately to make sure the heavy metals they contain (for example, nickel, cadmium) do not leak out, causing pollution in the local environment or damage to nearby wildlife and people.

Free rapid lateral flow testing for all adults

All adults in England can now take a free, rapid lateral flow device (LFD) test twice a week. LFD tests are for people who do not have symptoms. LFD testing can be accessed by going to a LFD testing site, ordering a test online, or collecting from a test site or some local pharmacies. You can also take a test through a workplace/school/university testing scheme, if eligible. Anyone with symptoms of COVID-19 should self-isolate immediately and book a PCR test online or by calling 119.

Enclose land by erection of fence to be used as private residential garden
8/21/0319/FUL
This plot of land on St Catherine's Hill was part of the 8.5 acres of verges, woodland, highways, paths and parcels of land sold at auction in 2019 by the original developer of the estate.
The above picture is what the green space will look like if part retrospective planning permission is granted for a 1.8 metre close boarded fence to be erected. Work was started on this in February.

The site includes three trees which have Tree Preservation Orders on them.

It's a Wonderful night for a Moondance

First FSCH event of 2021
On 19th June Friends of St Catherine's Hill held their first event of the year.

On the FSCH walk we saw and heard 2-3 birds. (Unfortunately fireworks were let off that night!)
The photo shows the white markings of the male bird on both the wing tips and tail edges. It is estimated that there are 12 pairs on the wider site, all of which nest on the ground and are very vulnerable to disturbance.

These images are from last week, taken on another BCP heathland site in Poole, where ringing and radio tagging of birds took place (under a special licence), to better understand how they utilise all the local spaces.

Water Tower Decorating
Dozens of grafitti artists travelled from all over the country on 26th June to decorate the water tower on St Catherine's Hill! They had organised the event on social media. (I asked permission to use the photos.)

First National U3A day
Christchurch U3A organised an event in Saxon Square to celebrate U3A day on the 2nd June.

Councillor Jane Kelly opened the event and a quartet from Christchurch U3A Vintage Brass played in the open and under cover on a slightly rainy day.
